Tuesday
17th of August 2021
Turn Around Day, Piraeus, Greece

I awoke at 5:15, but couldn't get back to sleep, excited to be back in Piraeus the port for Athens for the eighth and penultimate time this summer. I got up and abluted at 5:45 ready for breaking my fast at 6:30. I watched the sun rise over the Parthenon as I ate my full English with tomato juice but no coffee. On the other side of the ship there was a huge bank of smoke stretching south for miles from the extensive forest fires north west of Athens! When Vicki announced disembarkation had commenced at eight o'clock, I headed off, but forgot my hat!

I walked around the port to the Metro station, paying just 2.30 euros for a return ticket to Athens. I alighted at Monastiraki station as usual, but this time headed west through the barely open flea market. At ten euros I decided against going into the Ancient Greek Agora. I climbed up Apostle Paul boulevard to Agia Marina church. Unfortunately the National Observatory was closed, as was the adjcent Filopappou Hill due to the wild fire risk. Fortunately Areopagus Hill was open with the fabulous view of the Acropolis, but the sun was in the wrong position for photography.

The Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece

The Tower of the Winds in Athens, Greece

I traversed the north side of the Acropolis to get to the pretty Plaka district, where I took pictures of the famous Tower of the Winds. I walked alongside the Metro line from Monastiraki to Thissio to get to the Kerameikos archaeological site, but didn't go in. At 11:10 I had had enough of the heat, so I boarded the train again at Thissio to get back to Piraeus. I walked around the port again to get back to Cruise Terminal B "Themistocles" just after noon. It took less than twenty minutes for my lateral flow rapid antigen test to come back and I was soon on board.

I lunched on my favourite cheese burger and fries with no bun at the pool side Grill. At 1:15 I slept for nearly two hours, before updating this blog and uploading my morning's photos. At four o'clock I had the pool and jacuzzi to myself, but the Grill was heaving with the new arrivals having a late lunch! I then worked on my blogs for my fifth and sixth Greek Island cruises this summer!

At six o'clock we had the safety drill and at 6:45 Vicki introduced us in the Panorama lounge. I then adjourned to the Dolce Vita lounge to host the newly arrived solo travellers. Already there was Mimi/Ruth from Tynemouth. We were joined by Elisa from Madrid, June from the USA, Deborah from Santa Fe, Pauline from Bristol and Katherina.

At eight o'clock I led Mimi/Ruth, June, Deborah and Pauline down to the main Atlantide restaurant. I began with the mushroom soup and then continued with the smoked duck salad. I majored on the prime rib of beef and finished with the sugar free fantasia. Deborah ordered the well done end cut of the beef, but got given a rare slice, which she had to send back. The dinner party didn't break up until 10:20. I don't know how many miles I had walked during the day, since I had taken my old phone into Athens for fear of being mugged in the big city!

Wednesday
18th of August 2021
Hermoupolis, Syros

I awoke at 7 o'clock having slept for nine and a half hours! After breaking my fast in La Terrazza restaurant, I was one of the first off the ship just after eight o'clock. I found the entrance to the Cyclades Art Gallery behind the Customs House, but it hadn't opened yet. I walked along the marble paved main street just one block back from the front to get to the Church of the Dormition. Here a service was in full swing with the iconostatis open to reveal the high altar, so I couldn't go in.

I pressed on for the Industrial Museum, but that didn't open until 10 o'clock. The huge paddle wheel in the back yard did however make a good photo opportunity. I climbed up St. George's street to view several Orthodox churches and explore the British and Commonwealth War Grave cemeteries.

At the top of Ano Syros the medieval hilltop village, I went in St. Geroge's Roman Catholic Cathedral. Here two of the ship's tours were already ensconced. I spoke to both June & Deborah and told them they could come to me at 7:30 after the Captain's cocktail party at 7 o'clock tonight. I slowly made my way down to St. Nicholas's Orthodox church, missing out the other hilltop church of the Resurrection.

Back at the ship at 11:30, I had one small puttanesca pizza. I then slept for an hour and a half. I spent some time updating my Paros talk with the pictures I had taken on the Silver Moon's maiden voyage in June. At three o'clock I had a quick dip in the Mediterranean sea adjacent to the ship. Back at the ship's pool, Deborah introduced me to Nancy from South Carolina, as I did my six lengths and ten minutes in the hot tub.

Back in my vista suite, I started updating my Patmos talk, again with my June photographs. At 5:15 I gave my 40 minute lecture on Paros: the Marble Island. At 7 o'clock I hosted the solo travellers whilst the Captain's cocktail party was going on. I was joined by Mimi/Ruth, Pauline, Deborah & June from the previous night, plus new comers Liz from Galloway, Sharon from America, Nancy from South Carolina & her friend Janell.

At 7:45 I escorted Mimi/Ruth, Pauline, Deborah, June, Liz & Katerina up to La Terrazza Italian restaurant. We started with glasses of the rose prosecco and then I had the Valpolicella red wine. I began with the vegetable broth which was actually just like a Minestrone soup. I continued with Carpaccio of thinly sliced raw beef, before having the lovely medium rare Filetto, also of beef. I finished with the Casatta Siciliana.

At ten o'clock I went to the excellent Mind the Gap production show of British 1960s pop songs. I paticularly enjoyed the Dusty Springfield medley. I retired at eleven o'clock and started to watch my Paros talk on the TV, but after fifteen minutes I was too tired and so went to sleep. During the day I had done over 16 thousand steps equal to more than six miles of walking!

Thursday
19th of August 2021
Parikia, Paros

I awoke at 6:45 to the bow thrusters ready to break my fast at 7:15. I then watched my Paros talk on the TV to completion. Just before nine, I snuck on to the last tours tender away. I walked three miles on the foot path around the bay, passed Livadia and Krios beaches, to the light mast on the point. I came back the same way as far as Krios beach and then continued on the road back to Parikia. It took me three hours in the hot sun to do the six miles in total.

After ten minutes wait, I caught the noon tender back to the ship. Here I had a cheese burger with fries but no bun, at the pool side grill. Then I slept for an hour and forty minutes. I updated my blog and worked on my up coming presentations.

At four o'clock I did my six lengths and ten minutes in the hot tub. I then had one scoop of chocolate ice cream with extra chocolate shavings on top. At 5:15 I gave my 40 minute talk on Patmos: the Island of the Book of Revelation. At seven o'clock I hosted the solo travellers with firstly Greek Katherina and then Czech Katerina.

At 7:45 we went up to the Hot Rocks Grill on the pool deck with June, Nancy, Janell, Katerina, Liz, Pauline, Mimi/Ruth & me, but not Deborah who was having eye trouble. I began with the New York salad and then cooked a filet mignon on the lava stone with a jacket potato and two vegetable skewers. It was only a small steak, so Nancy came to my rescue with half of hers!

Firstly Katerina had to slip away to do door duty and then June went to bed. I left at 9:50 in order to see the Voce dell' Opera trio of soprano Rhiannon, baritone Giovanni & pianist Natalia. I managed to stay awake throughout.

Back in my vista suite, I watched my Patmos lecture on the TV, going to sleep at 11:45. During the day I had done over nineteen thousand steps, equal to nearly eight miles of walking!

Friday
20th of August 2021
Skala, Patmos

I awoke at 6:45 before the bow thrusters had started up. I had the full English as usual in La Terrazza buffet. I was asked to bid for an Atlantic Islands cruise on the Silver Spirit at the end of September, but I was already committed to Saga then.

I snuck on to the penultimate tours tender at 8:50 and headed up to the Acropolis on the Castle Hill (Kastelli). It was a 30 minute hike up to St. Constantine's chapel and the ancient ruins at the top. There were 360 degree views across both sides of the narrow island. The southern foot path going down was too steep, so I retraced my steps back to the top of the hill, to descend via the northern foot path I had come up.

Back at the ship at eleven o'clock, I had a small Puttanesca pizza with the olive/cheese/tomato tasters for starters, with the view of the fortified monastery of St. John on the hill top. I then slept for two hours. At 2:20 I caught the tender back into Skala to climb back up the stone path to the famous Cave of the Apocalypse, where St. John the Theologian of Patmos had had his revelatory visions. However the Grotto was closed in the afternoon, so I retreated back down the way I had come again.

I caught the 3:20 tender back to the ship, ready to up date this blog and back up my day's photographs. At four o'clock there was a queue for the complimentary rapid lateral flow test, so I went swimming and jacuzzing instead. After changing for the evening, I went back for my test with no queue. At 5:30 I gave my 45 minute talk on Rhodes: the Island of the Knights. American Jerry was wearing a Maltese cross as he was a modern day Knight of St. John, so I called him out in the lecture. Back in my vista suite, my agent Robin asked me to bid for some Celebrity cruises in September and my agent Sara was offering some Celebrity cruises in October. However having done six cruises this summer already, I decided not to place any bids this time around.

At seven o'clock I hosted the solos with the lovely soprano Rhiannon. Alongside the regulars were American June, Spanish Elisa and newcomer Swiss Elizabeth. At 7:40 I popped down to the S.A.L.T. restaurant to warn them I needed a table for eight.

At 7:50 we all trooped down one deck. Table one had Deborah from America, Liz from Scotland, Rhiannon from Wales and me from England. Behind us was the noisy table two with Brits Pauline & Mimi/Ruth and Americans Nancy & Janell! I began with the Patmos seafood ravioli, continued with the Patmos pork chop and finished with the Patmos pouggia!

At ten o'clock I went to hear Jo(anna)'s excellent cabaret.

JO'S PLAYLIST

I particularly liked the Doris Day and Karen Carpenter medleys. Back in bed, my TV had Jon Fleming's destination lecture on Rhodes, not mine, running! I went to sleep at 11:30 having done nearly nineteen thousand steps equivalent to nearly eight miles of walking during the day.

Saturday
21st of August 2021
Rhodes, Greece

I awoke at 6:45 ready to break my fast in La Terrazza restaurant at 7:15. Back in my vista suite, I updated this blog and awaited the clearance announcement. I was one of the first off the ship just after eight o'clock. I walked around the inner harbour to the new town, where I photographed the old and new buildings of the modern art gallery, but at six euros declined to go in. I found half an hour's free wi-fi at the Western Saloon Pub.

Back at the ship at eleven o'clock, I had to wait for the crew safety drill to finish, before I could have my two smoked salmon croissants in the Arts Cafe. I then slept for 80 minutes.

The church in Lindos, Rhodes

The church in Lindos, Rhodes

Back in the old town, I went to the start of the ramparts walk only to find it closed at the weekend, in spite of what the girl in the tourist information office had told me in the morning, so I made a tour of the muslim mosques of Rhodes instead, none of which were open. At the far end of the ramparts walk I was able to ascend the steps to the top of the wall, to get the picture of Silver Moon from across the roof tops that I had wanted!

Back at the ship again, I updated this blog and back upped my day's photographs. At four o'clock I did six lengths and spent twelve minutes in one of the jacuzzis. I then had two scoops of sour cherry ice cream with chocolate shavings and a peanut cookie.

Back in my vista suite again, I watched a documentary on the Apollo 11 moon landing. At seven o'clock I hosted the solo travellers with Jo(anna) the singer. At 7:45 I popped down to the Atlantide restaurant to warn them that I needed a table for nine people!

At eight o'clock I led Liz, Nancy, Janell, June, Mimi/Ruth, Pauline, Deborah and Jo(anna) down to deck four. I began with the lobster bisque and continued with the lobster salad, but it was a starter not a salad! I then had the New York strip (sirloin) steak with chips and asparagus. I finished with the three layered chocolate mousse. We didn't all finish until 10:20, when it was too late to go to Vicki's comedy show. I went to bed at 10:30 having done over twenty thousand steps equal to eight miles of walking during the day!

Sunday
22nd of August 2021
First Sea Day

I awoke at 6:20 and dozed until 6:50 having slept for nearly eight hours! At 7:20 I did eight circuits of the top deck walking track equal to one mile. I broke my fast with two eggs Benedict for a change. When Danushka came to service the suite, I did eight more circuits. I then worked on updating my Syros lecture with the pictures I had taken a few days previously.

At 11:15 I went to the Kleftiko lamb cooking demonstration, where I had TWO glasses of Cypriot red wine with a small portion of lamb and potato. At noon I lunched at the Greek buffet at the pool side grill. I had small portions of the moussaka and ratatouille together with a large chicken and lamb wrap, before sleeping for over an hour and a half. I then updated my lectures on Syros and Paros with the photographs I had taken in the last few days, before swimming and jacuzzi-ing as usual in the very hot sun.

At 5:15 I gave my 40 minute talk on Limassol: the Port for Cyprus. At seven o'clock I hosted the solos with Sofia. Participants included Liz, Nancy, Janell, June, Mimi/Ruth, Pauline & Deborah, but only the last three joined Sofia and me for dinner. I led them up to La Terrazza restaurant, where I began with the vegetable broth, which was like minestrone soup. I continued with the Catherine de Medici salad and the large veal chop. I finished with the warm chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. We all began with one glass of rose prosecco and then I had two glasses of the Chianti Classico red wine from Tuscany. At ten o'clock I escorted Deborah to the Grande Amore operatic production show. I finally got to bed at 11:30 having done over seven and a half thousand steps equivalent to three miles of walking.

Monday
23rd of August 2021
Limassol, Cyprus

I awoke at seven o'clock ready for the full English break fast as usual. Unfortunately the first shuttle bus wasn't until 9:30, so I had an hour and a half to kill. I began updating my Patmos talk with the hike to the Acropolis there that I had undertaken a few days previously.

The complimentary bus got us into Limassol by 9:40, so I headed for the tourist information office next to the old port. I walked along the promenade to St. Catherine's Roman Catholic church, before finding the Municipal Art Gallery, but at two euros I declined to go in. However, the Municipal Museum and Archaeological Museum nearby were both free. The latter had beautifully cold air conditioning, so I lingered over the interesting Amathous exhibition.

Limassol, Cyprus from the castle

Limassol, Cyprus from the castle

Back in the down town area, my favourite one euro hat shop had gone bust, but I did buy a one euro back pack from the bag shop. Back at the ship, I had a cheese burger and fries with no bun at the pool side Grill. I then slept for an hour and a quarter.

At 2:30 I caught the shuttle back into the city, to go swimming at the Marina's private beach, which I had recconnoitred on a previous visit. I then caught the 3:30 bus back to the ship. Here I did my six lengths and spent ten minutes in the hot tub under the very hot sunshine.

Back in my vista suite, I updated this blog and back upped my morning's photographs. At seven o'clock I hosted the solo travellers with Giovanni the gay operatic singer from Palermo on Sicily. At 7:45 I led Janell, Nancy, June, Liz, Giovanni, Deborah, Pauline and Mimi/Ruth down to the Atlantide main restaurant. I began with the lobster bisque, continued with the ravioli pasta course and then had three small lamb chops. Nancy came to my rescue with two more lamb chops and Mimi/Ruth gave me her spicy lobster tail! I finished with the sugar free fantasia dessert.

At ten o'clock I was sat with Nancy & Janell for the Simply Divine quartet of singers by the pool. At the end of their show, I joined in the regulation YMCA and then danced with Deborah and Mimi/Ruth, but Pauline declined to dance. It was still very hot and humid, so I slipped away after just a couple of dances. Back in my vista suite, I updated this blog and went to bed soon after eleven o'clock. During the day I had done over fifteen thousand steps equal to over six miles of walking!

Tuesday
24th of August 2021
Second Sea Day

I got up at 6:40 and was ready for breaking my fast at 7:10, but the buffet didn't open until 7:30 as it was a sea day. After my usual full English, I did eight laps of the top deck equal to one mile of walking. At 8:45 Danushka came to service my suite, so I did another eight circuits. I then had a decaf capucchino from the self-service machine in the Observation Library hoping to see some dolphins.

Back in my suite, I started thinking about the slides for my Saga cruise to France & Spain in October. At 11:15 I went to the culinary demonstration and talk in the theatre with an audience of 32 people. I had one glass of the Cretan white wine and a small taste of the Gamopilafo pilaf rice dish. We also watched the preparation of Dakos, which is cold cheese, olive and tomato on rusk-like bread moistened with olive oil.

At noon I gave the outdoor buffet a miss and instead lunched on a small Puttanesca pizza overlooking the pool. At 12:30 I slept for nearly an hour and a half. I continued working on my presentations until three o'clock, when I went for an early swim. Unfortunately the pool was still busy, so I had my ten minutes in the hot tub first. By then the pool had thinned out and I was able to do my six lengths without interruption. I chatted to Janell & Nancy and waved to Mimi/Ruth & Pauline in the other jacuzzi.

At 5:25 the broadcast technician invited me into his den to explain the problems they had been having with their computer server, after which I gave my 35 minute talk on Heraklion: the Capital of Crete. At seven o'clock I hosted the solo travellers with Katherina, where we were joined by couple Brian & Carol from London.

At 7:45 we trooped down to the Sea And Land Taste (S.A.L.T.) restaurant. Table one had Mimi/Ruth, Pauline, Liz, June, Nancy & Janell, whereas table two was Deborah, Katherina, Brian, Carol and myself. We began with several Turkish meze dishes to share chosen by Greek Katherina. I then had three lamb chops, followed by the chocolate baklava. I also had half of Deborah's warm chocolate cake. We were drinking Turkish wine to go with the ethnic meal.

At ten o'clock I went to the excellent Queen tribute show Rock Rhapsody. When it ended at eleven o'clock, I retired to watch the end of my Limassol talk on the TV. Jon Fleming's Rhodes lecture had been removed, but mine was still missing, as was my Heraklion talk from this afternoon. I went to sleep at 11:30, having done nearly seven thousand steps, equivalent to nearly three miles of walking during the day.

Wednesday
25th of August 2021
Heraklion, Crete, Greece

I awoke at 5:20 and couldn't get back to sleep, getting up just before six o'clock. At 6:30 I could have gone to the Arts Cafe, but decided to wait until La Terrazza buffet opened at seven. I was off the ship soon after eight, walking into the city. I headed south from the Sabbionara bastion, but got lost in the south east suburbs. I back tracked to the main square and eventually found the right way back to the ramparts.

At the southernmost point of the fortifications, I viewed the tomb of the author of Zorba the Greek. I then headed north west to complete the tour of the bastions. I walked back east along the coast, before heading into the city centre. St. Mark's basilica had a social media art exhibition, not nearly as good as the world war two display there in June.

Back at the ship at 10:45, I had walked over six miles. I brunched on two smoked salmon croissants in the Arts Cafe, before sleeping for nearly two hours. At 3:30 I went along to the theatre to set up my Mykonos talk, but ALL the ship's computers were paralysed. The lectern laptop wouldn't accept my USB memory stick, so I rushed back to my suite to get my own adaptors. The VGA to HDMI adaptor wouldn't work, but my Mini Display Port to HDMI did work with both video and audio. The draw backs were that PowerPoint didn't recognise it as a second monitor, so I couldn't use presenter view, and the broadcast centre was unable to record my 40 minute talk. It turned out that all of Silversea's computer servers worldwide had gone down!

At 5:30 I did six clear lengths of the pool, but both jacuzzis were occupied, so I walked to the back of the ship to use the one on the rear terrace. This had a lovely view over Heraklion all the way to the conical mountain which used to supply water to the famous Minoan palace of Knossos! I went up to the top deck to watch the sail away, where we had the exchange of ship's horns with the Silversea's little Silver Explorer, still out of service and recently moved from Souda Bay at the west end of Crete to Heraklion harbour in the centre of the island. I gave the 6:30 Musical show a miss, instead hosting first Pauline, then Deborah, Liz, June, Mimi, Nancy & Janell as the show came out.

At 7:40 I dashed up to La Terrazza Italian restaurant to ask for a table for eight, but only two tables of four were available. Ten minutes later I led the ladies up two decks to our two tables in a nearly empty restaurant. I was sat with Deborah, Nancy & Janelle, with the other four on a nearby table. I began with the rich tomato soup, continued with the Catherine de Medici salad and majored on the Filleto of beef. I had the lovely red wine from Puglia to go with my first three courses. I finished with my favourite Casatta Siciliana.

The party broke up at 9:50, when I updated this blog and up loaded my morning's photographs. I went to sleep at 10:15, having done over twenty thousand steps or eight miles during the day.

Thursday
26th of August 2021
Mykonos, Greece

I awoke at 6:20 and got up at 6:40 as the first tender went down. I broke my fast with the full English and then joined the back of the two queues for the complimentary rapid lateral flow antigen test outside the Panorama lounge. The queues moved quickly and I was swabbed within 12 minutes. Back in my vista suite, I sorted out my paperwork for my return home.

At 9 o'clock I snuck on to the last tour tender away. I walked four miles to St. John's beach, where the motion picture Shirley Valentine was filmed. I then came back via the lovely Ornos beach.

Mykonos

Mykonos

I hitched a ride in a little van to Ornos village half a mile away and then another ride along the road back to Mykonos town. I caught the 11:45 tender back to the ship, having walked over six miles during the morning.

Back at the ship at noon, I lunched on a cheese burger with fries but no bun at the pool side grill. I then slept for nearly two hours. Having updated my Piraeus presentation and this blog, at 3:45 I swam and jacuzzied as per usual. I had a view of Mykonos town with three cruise ships: Azamara, Costa & MSC - cruising had finally restarted in the Med!

Back in my vista suite, I started to pack ready for going home the next day. At 5:30 I gave my 30 minute talk on Piraeus: the Port for Athens. In the Dolce Vita lounge Vicki kindly went through my Lorient slides, where she lives with her French husband.

At seven o'clock I hosted the solo travellers with Josh the singer. He took June, Nancy, Janell & Liz down to the Atlantide main restaurant, whilst I took Deborah, Pauline & Mimi/Ruth up to the Hot Rocks Grill.

I began with the New York blue cheese salad, followed by the filet mignon on the lava stone, with jacket potato and two vegetable kebabs. I had two glasses of the lovely Chilean red wine, as we listened to Charlie singing. When he played Zorba the Greek, Elisa from Madrid started dancing, so I joined her and then Mimi/Ruth came along too. I finished with the New York cheese cake. At ten o'clock the other four ladies came up from deck 4 to say goodbye to us on deck 10.

At 10:30 I adjourned to my vista suite to finish my packing. I went to bed at 11:15, having done over eighteen and a half thousand steps, equal to over seven miles of walking during the day.

Friday
27th of August 2021
Piraeus -> ATHens -> LHR -> BoMoH

I awoke just after six o'clock, one hour before my alarm. I had one final full English break fast in La Terrazza, before going up on to the top deck to watch the parade of ferries leaving the harbour and the sun rising over the Athenian hills. Back in my vista suite, I updated this blog and finished packing my carry on case. Unfortunately my best smart phone fell on to the floor tiles in my wet room and the screen got cracked. I hope that Android version 12 will come out in September and so I will be able to buy a discounted Android 11 one then.

At eight o'clock I adjourned to the Observation Library to play Free Cell. At nine o'clock dark blue tags were called and I left the ship. The complimentary transfer coach left at 9:20, ten minutes early. We went past both Piraeus marinas, before driving north on the motorway built over the river. We then turned right on to the toll motorway and got to the airport after one hour. Here I found a power socket to recharge my laptop and smart phone.

After a toilet stop, I chatted to a couple from Norwich. At one o'clock the BA desks opened with two check-ins for Club class but only one for steerage. Pauline & Mimi/Ruth raced through, but Brian & Carol were held back when she couldn't find her UK locator form on her smart phone! I had to queue for 40 minutes with Liz just behind me. The check-in assistant wanted to see my Vax certificate, my rapid lateral flow antigen test result and my UK locator form, but not my Day 2 test receipt. Passport control took less than five minutes, with a slightly longer queue for the EU desks than the All passport ones for us. Security took ten minutes and they didn't pick up on my bottle of soda water!

Once through to the lounge, I found a table to set up my laptop to update this blog. At the gate, I sat with Pauline & Mimi/Ruth until they were called forward. We took off half an hour late, but arrived nearly on time. Once airborne, I got out, and worked on, my laptop for one hour. We were given a bag of crisps to eat and a bottle of water to drink. I then slept for an hour, waking up for a view of the Alps.

Passport control at LHR was heaving, but the queue for the electronic gates for UK citizens moved quickly and I was through in ten minutes. I said goodbye to Pauline at the baggage carousel and hopped on the tube to Hounslow West. Unfortunately the Skylark B&B couldn't find the key for the gate to the back yard where my car was parked. The boss had taken it with him and was now in hospital. The lads eventually took the gates off their hinges and I was away after a ten minute delay. I got home at 21:00 after a sensational summer in the Med!
