BoMoH -> Hounslow
11th Aug. 2025
Monday

I got up just before six o'clock ready for my banana and All-Bran cereal breakfast. I called for a Streamline taxi at 8:45. Hamid arrived in a VW Caddy, ready to take me to BoMoH coach station.

At 9:50 the Flixbus service to London arrived and I nabbed a front seat just behind Luis the Spanish (?) driver. We called at SoToN Central railway station and SoToN University, but not at Ringwood. I dozed for half an hour in between the delays at both ends of the M3. The new A34/M3 intersection will be huge.

We arrived at LHR T5 just fifteen minute late. This was my first time on a Flixbus, which was half the price of the usual National Express coach. They are now engaged in a price war, with some journeys costing only £10!

After using the loo at the terminal, I took the Piccadilly tube train to Hounslow Central. Just outside the station, I lunched al fresco at the Cafe Venezia. I had the delicious smoked salmon baguette with all the salads, bar the jalapeno peppers. I had one cup of English breakfast tea to drink.

At 2:15 I checked into the Travelodge, just along the street. I then headed out the 250 yards to Hounslow High Road, where I bought my supper and breakfast in the Iceland (ex Bejam) shop and a pint of milk in ASDA's huge store.

Back in my room, I started work on this blog, whilst cooling off with an electric fan. We were now in the fourth heat wave of the summer, the first three of which I had been able to enjoy at home for a change. However, I was glad to be heading off again, after my eight weeks in bonny BoMoH. I spent the evening working on my laptop and watching television, going to bed at 10:40. I slept with just a towel over me as the room had no air conditioning.

LHR -> ATHens
12th of August 2025
Tuesday

I awoke at 6:20 ready for my Chicken Tikka breakfast with Everyday tea to drink. I left the Travelodge at eight o'clock and was at LHR before 8:30. Since I had got my boarding card two weeks previously, I had already nabbed seat 9F a window seat only two rows back from a half empty business class. Check-in opened at 9:15, but was chaotic with desks opening and closing. After half an hour, I eventually got through.

Security took ten minutes, after which I found a seat with a view of the planes taking off. Here I read two newspapers and flicked through one cruising magazine. At the gate, group three was called early and I got on the Aegean Airlines Airbus A321neo.

We pulled back on time, but then sat on two taxiways for twenty five minutes. We took off into the easterly breeze climbing over Hampton Court Palace. We crossed the Channel just north of Dover, where I closed my window and started updating this blog.

At the first round of the drinks trolley I had an apple juice to drink. I was then surprised to be offered the choice of a complimentary hot lunch. I had the meatballs and pasta to eat followed by a small bowl of coleslaw with red berries. I finished with a chocolate chip cookie to eat. At the second round of the drinks trolley, I had some sparkling water rather than tea or coffee to drink.

We landed after a smooth three and a quarter hour flight across France, Germany and the former Yugoslavia. There were no queues at passport control, but the bags took a while to appear. Thankfully mine was one of the first to arrive.

In the foyer there was a Viking rep, but no Silversea rep or driver waiting for me, so I caught the €9.00 metro. En route I had a What's App message from the Guest Relations Manager (GRM) Jason. I had to change trains at Monastiraki as the first one wasn't going all the way to the new Piraeus underground station. At the old surface station in Piraeus, I jumped into a taxi which charged me €8:00 for the short run to the cruise terminal.

Just after eight o'clock, I was quickly checked-in and shown to my ninth floor suite which had both a bath and a shower. I had a walk-in closet, a double bed and a lounge area with two full height picture windows overlooking the entrance to Piraeus harbour. I met my stewardess Miria from Uganda, but didn't have time to unpack.

At 8:30 I dined al fresco at the Pool Grill with me cooking a Filet Mignon on the hot rock. I had a jacket potato, one skewer of vegetables and a small pot of Bearnaise sauce to eat with my meat. I finished the meal with two small scoops of pistacio ice cream. I had just two glasses of sparkling water to drink.

At 9:30 I met Cruise Director (CD) P.J. from South Africa and Assistant Cruise Director (ACD) Eleanor Hutchinson fromYorkshire at the door to the Venetian theatre. The welcome showtime consisted of three sets by the four vocalists and four musicians interspersed with jokes and chat from PJ and Eleanor. The latter introduced me to the audience. Back in my suite, I unpacked and updated this blog. I went to sleep at 11:30, but it was still only 9:30 on BST. During the day I had done eight thousand steps equal to over three miles of walking.

Nafplion, Peloponnese
13th August 2025
Wednesday

I awoke at 6:30 and got up at 7:30, when I had a decaff coffee from the super new machine in my suite. My butler Neo came in to introduce himself and I gave him my laundry bag. At 8:15 I had a continental breakfast in La Terrazza buffet consisting of one croissant and one bread roll with ham and cheese. I had just one glass of sparkling water to drink. Back in my suite, Miria had just finished servicing it, but she took away the drip tray from the new coffee machine as the large cups don't fit properly.

I caught the first independents' shuttle away at ten o'clock. I collected a black & white photocopied map on the quayside and a coloured one from the tourist information kiosk. I recorded my piece to camera in front of the abandoned steam locomotive. I walked along the prom to the far end to find the elevator to the hotel, and then gradually walked back down taking photographs.

Back at the quayside, I caught the noon shuttle back to the ship, where I had my first small puttanesca pizza for lunch. I then slept for over an hour, before having my second decaff coffee from the brand new machine. At three o'clock I caught the local shuttle boat back to the quayside. I walked the length of the main street (Vas. Konstantinou) to Syntagma Square, where I photographed the two former muslim mosques. I headed past the two sea swimming pools to get to the promenade around the headland. This was closed off for fear of rock falls, but could be easily circumvented. This crazy paved walkway is so scenic leading to the main beach, where again the other gate can be easily bypassed. Back in the town, I caught the four o'clock shuttle boat back to the ship.

At five o'clock I sat with a couple from Yorkshire at the safety briefing. At 6:15 I was sat in La Dolce Vita lounge ready for the solo travellers get together, when the future cruise lady said to me aren't you lecturing at 6:30? I had misread the programme which had said: "6:30 Champagne Cocktails & Creative Conversations with Martin Lee: Ermoupolis: Capital of Syros". I hadn't read past the Champagne Cocktails opening, so I had to fly back to my suite to get my things and get set up in the Venetian theatre. Oleksander (Alex) from Ukraine set me up, but didn't have a power socket adaptor, so I had to rush back to my cabin again. I managed to start only two minutes late, but my sound tracks weren't working, I rushed through in thirty five minutes, unable to play my videos. Afterwards, it transpired that my laptop wasn't set to stream the sounds to the phone jack socket. I had just one question at the end to field, when a gent asked if St John of Patmos had any connection with Syros.

At 7:30 I asked for a sharing table in the Atlantide Main Dining Room (MDR). Eventually Susan, originally from Chicago, and Arlene, originally from Brooklyn, but both now living near Orlando in Florida, arrived. I had the lobster bisque and the rib eye steak with chips and veg to eat. I had two glasses of the Greek red wine of the day to drink.

The service was rather slow, so at 9:20 I had to slip out for the Captain's welcome. This was followed by the Kaleidoscope of Klassics showtime. Ty the South African singer of "Billie Jean" had perfected Michael Jackson's moonwalks. Great songs by Mick Jagger, Freddie Mercury and the Eagles followed. They finished with a barnstorming extended medley of Elton John's hits. I went to sleep at 11:30 having done over fourteen thousand steps, nearly equal to six miles of walking during the day.

Ermoupolis, Syros, Greece
14th August 2025
Thursday

I awoke at 6:45 ready for my cooked breakfast, but without eggs, at 7:30 al fresco a La Terrazza. I was sat just behind Susan and Arlene from Florida. At eight o'clock I was one of the first guests off the ship, walking through the new city to the old town (Ano Syros) on the left hand hilltop.

At nine o'clock I reached St George's Roman Catholic church at the top, before descending to the gorge on the north west side of the city. I followed this past a redundant windmill to a small chapel and the remnants of the stream, but could progress no further up the gorge. I backtracked and headed for the fishing harbour. I stopped off at the Industrial Museum which only charged me one euro as an OAP for entry. It had half a dozen rooms, one of which held an Enfield 8000 electric car, originally built on the Isle of White (IoW), but then built on Syros. I walked back to the ship via the promenade having done over six miles of walking during the morning.

At 11:30 I had my second small puttanesca pizza of this cruise for lunch, before sleeping for an hour and a quarter. At two o'clock I ventured out again, walking along the east coast to the headland, before retracing my steps back to the ship. At 3:30 I updated this blog, before changing into my swimwear. I then spent five minutes swimming in the Mediterranean sea close to the ship. It was cool, clear and salty with lots of fish. After I had dried off, I returned to the ship and did six lengths of the long pool on board.

Back in my suite, I worked on my laptop. At 6:30 I met cruise staffer Reina from Beirut in the Lebanon at the solo travellers meet up, but nobody else turned up. At 6:45 I adjourned to the MDR where I asked for a sharing table. Eventually JoAnn, originally from Long Island and now living in Boca Raton in Florida, arrived. I told her that I had visited my cousin Lady Jacqueline Laker when she lived on the Royal Palm estate in Boca. I had the tomato soup, the roast duck and the no sugar added profiteroles to eat. I had two glasses of Rioja red wine to drink.

At 9:30 I moved up to the pool deck for the dance party. The four singers and four musisians began with Hot Stuff, so I led off the Electric Slide, but only one of the singers and none of the cruise staff joined in with me. I lay down at the back of the pool deck for the rest of the show which was full of great dance songs. I went to sleep at 10:30 having done twenty two and a half thousand steps, equal to nine miles of walking during the day.

Agios Nikalaos, Crete, Greece
15th August 2025
Friday

I awoke at 6:15 ready for my proper decaff coffee from the brand new machine in my suite. Just after seven, I had a full English breakfast with scrambled egg al fresco a La Terrazza. The ship was cleared at 8:10, when I headed off walking along the proms and beaches taking photos as I went. I got as far as the crystal clear stream which was in full spate wasting so much precious freshwater as usual.

I came back via the roads to the centre of the town, where the main church was giving out hunks of sesame seed bread to the locals. This was to celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (ABVM) into Heaven, so the Friday was a bank holiday. I climbed up to the viewpoints above the central lake, before returning to the ship at eleven o'clock. I had done twelve and a half thousand steps, equal to five miles of walking, during my morning explorations.

At 11:45 I had my third small puttanesca pizza of the cruise, before sleeping for an hour and a quarter. At two o'clock I headed out again but only got half a mile along the other prom to Amoudi beach before turning back in the heat. I walked around the lake to the Fishermen's chapel, before going back to the ship. Here I backed up my photographs from my first three days of this cruise. The future cruise presentation was brought forward from 5:30 to five o'clock,

At 5:15 I did six lengths of the long pool, but I did have to avoid some children. At six o'clock I went down to the Venetian theatre, but a Venetian Society cocktail party had been inserted into the programme. CD PJ introduced the Captain who then introduced Marcello the future cruise manager. At the end CD PJ (playing Andrea Bocelli) and ACD Eleanor (playing Celine Dion) sang The Prayer duet. This finished at 6:25, so I only had five minutes in which to set up. At 6:30 I gave my forty minute talk on Rhodes: the Island of the Knights. I had just one question at the end to field.

At 7:30 I sat with Alison & Bob from Sydney in the MDR. He had been born near Zadar in Croatia and his family had emigrated to Australia when he was four. They had both had careers in IT. I began with the prawn bisque which was suspiciously like the lobster bisque of two nights previously. I had the sirloin steak with chips for my main course, but resisted the temptation to have a dessert at the end. I had two glasses of the Greek red wine to drink.

At 9:30 I sat with the couple from Yorkshire to watch ACD Eleanor Hutchinson's excellent Leading Ladies cabaret She sang songs by Judy, Barbra, Julie, Elaine, Doris, Edith and Celine; no need for surnames here. I went to sleep at eleven o'clock having done over twenty thousand steps, equal to over eight miles of walking during the day.

Rhodes, Dodecanese, Greece
16th of August 2025
Saturday

I awoke at 7:20 ready for my metal pod of decaff coffee. At eight o'clock I had the full English breakfast with just one glass of sparkling water. When I got back to my suite, Miria was still working, so I went up to Tor's Observation Lounge to watch the delayed berthing with the help of two tugs, fighting against the strong wind. Tor's is named after Torstein Hagen the CEO of Viking Cruises. (All the Viking ocean cruise ships have a Manfredi's restaurant, named after Manfredi Lefebvre the former outright owner of Silversea cruises, a company founded by his father. He sold two thirds of his share in Silversea to the Royal Caribbean Group for about one billion dollars and subsequently bought the bankrupt Crystal Line of two cruise ships instead!)

Back in my suite again, I updated this blog, whilst the tours were being dispatched. I finally got off the ship at ten o'clock and walked via the boardwalk to the New Town. Unfortunately because the previous day had been a holy one (ABVM), Saturday was also a bank holiday and the main Tourist Information Office (TIO) was closed, despite there being two cruise ships in port.

I doubled back into the old town to see if the other TIO was open, but it too was closed for the two days. I exited the old town through the d'Amboise gate back into the new town. I walked past Marks & Spencer (M&S) through the modern shopping area. The modern art gallery was open, but I wasn't going to waste €6 on going in! I finally found the modern miniature Colossus of Rhodes sculpture near the aquarium, before turning around. I came back through the old town to the ship.

At 12:30 I had a beefburger and chips with no bun at the pool grill with just one glass of sparkling water to drink. I then slept for one hour. I spent most of the afternoon working on my laptop, until I popped ashore again at fourish. I walked to one of the columns surmounted by a deer at the mouth of the inner harbour, where the Colossus may have stood.

Back at the ship, I did six lengths of the long pool. At six o'clock Alex set me up and for the first time this cruise I was able to let my photos run whilst I greeted the guests at the door. At 6:30 I gave my forty minute talk on Kusadasi: the Port for Ephesus. Since it had been advertised as a Champagne Cocktails & Creative Conversations session, at the end I drank one of the gin and champagne based cocktails which went straight to my head.

In the Atlantide MDR, Guest Relations Manager (GRM) Jason told me that I would have to move suites at the end of the cruise, but I would be getting a balcony suite instead! I waited half an hour at a sharing table, but most people were at the Pan Asian buffet in the Indochine restaurant next door, so I dined alone. I had the prawn cocktail, the loin of lamb with cheese crust and the no sugar added chocolate choux to eat. I had just one glass of the Billi Billi red wine from Victoria in Australia to drink.

At 9:30 I enjoyed the cabaret of Felicity Nxele from Cape Town, but had trouble staying awake for the first time this cruise. She concentrated on Tina Turner's hits, but also covered Carole King, Diana Ross and Adele. I went to bed at 10:30, having done seventeen and a half thousand steps, equal to seven miles of walking during the day.

Kusadasi, Turkey
17-Aug-2025
Sunday

I didn't wake up until 7:50, having slept for over nine hours. All my walking and swimming had finally caught up with me! At 8:30 I had the full English breakfast to eat in the buffet, with just one glass of sparkling water to drink.

I didn't get off the ship until 9:30, when I walked along the prom to the marina and back. I was then able to use the free wi-fi outside the Starbucks coffee bar. I had free wi-fi on my main Nokia phone on board, but my Samsung mobile was on Utility Warehouse's EU roaming deal which didn't include Turkey. At 11:30 I had a small puttanesca pizza for lunch in the al fresco Spaccanapoli pizzeria. I then slept for half an hour, before having my second decaff coffee pod of the day.

At 2:30 I headed out again along the main shopping street as far as the wooded cemetery. I then doubled back to the centre of town, before reaching the front again. I stopped off at Starbucks to use the free wi-fi and the shopping centre's toilets. I then walked along the prom towards Pigeon Island, before climbing the hill to the large Kusadasi sign. However, I was unable to find an easy way up to Kemal Ataturk's statue on the top of the hill.

Back at the ship, I worked on my laptop. At 5:30 I did six lengths of the long, warm, salty swimming pool, which was nearly empty of other people. At 6:15 I went to La Dolce Vita lounge for canapes and potato crisps, but no solo travellers joined me.

At 6:45 I adjourned to the MDR, but in view of the late running tours, I had to dine alone. I had the c(h)ig borek Turkish starter followed by a large pork chop. I finished with the Stilton cheese board, because I knew there would be a Turkish dessert buffet later that evening in the atrium.

I then went ashore to soak up the evening buzz of the illuminated town. I stopped off outside Starbucks, before partaking of the Turkish dessert buffet back on board. At 9:30 Alfie, one of the vocalists, was ill, so CD PJ performed his excellent cabaret instead. He did two ALW songs, Music of the Night from Phantom and one from Sunset Boulevard. He did two R&H numbers: the morning song from Oklahoma and the evening song from South Pacific. He ended with three Andrea Bocelli songs, but I only knew the middle one: Ave Maria. I went to sleep at eleven o'clock, having done over twenty five thousand steps, equal to over ten miles of walking during the day.

Mykonos, Cyclades, Greece
18th August 2025
Monday

I awoke just before seven o'clock, having slept for nearly eight hours, ready for a delicious decaff coffee pod. I had the full English breakfast in La Terrazza with glasses of tomato juice and sparkling water. Back in my suite, I worked on my laptop as the ship's tours were tendering first. When Miria came to service the suite I moved up to Tor's Observation lounge, where I could see a large cruise ship berthed in the new port at Toulos.

At 9:40 I was on the first tender for independents who wanted to go ashore. I climbed up the hill and crossed the ridge to get to Saint Anne's chapel (Aghios Anna). I had a view of the reservoir and the opposite coast of the island, but had had enough of the heat, so turned back. I descended into Mykonos Town (Chora), but the agricultural museum was closed on Mondays. I rushed back along the quayside to catch the 11:30 tender back to the ship.

Here I had another small, puttanesca pizza to eat with two glasses of sparkling water to drink. I then slept for just half an hour, before catching the one o'clock tender ashore again. I walked back around the quayside and town beach to the Town Hall. I photographed the ruins of the castle built of grey granite and wandered through the Little Venice quarter. I got as far as the famous row of six windmills, before turning into the southern part of the town.

I found the southern bus station, before heading back into the town centre. I passed the naval museum and Lena's house, but both were closed on Mondays. The archaeological museum was open, but I didn't go in. I caught the 3:30 tender back to the ship, where I had my third decaff coffee pod of the day to drink.

Just after five o'clock, I did my six lengths of the long cool pool, with only one child to avoid. At 6:15 Alex set me up and at 6:30 I gave my forty minute talk on Athens to a smaller audience, as people were packing and not planning to visit Athens. At the end, Alex told me that he lives in Athens and I hadn't made any mistakes. I walked out clutching my champagne cocktail.

Next I went to the MDR, but despite waiting half an hour, no other sharers materialised, so I dined alone. I had the cauliflower veloute, the Wiener schnitzel and the no sugar added (not sugar free) raspberry dessert. I had just one glass of French red wine to drink.

At 9:15 we had the crew parade by the pool followed by the MoTown showtime. This included a Ukrainian (?) dance couple who had newly arrived on board. I sat with Alison and Bob from Australia and had one glass of the Amaretto cocktail. Back in my old cabin, I had my new suite transfer details and my programme for the follow-on cruise. I went to sleep at eleven o'clock having done over eighteen thousand steps, equal to over seven miles of walking during the day.

Piraeus, Athens, Greece
19th Aug. 2025
Tuesday

I awoke just before my seven o'clock alarm, having slept for eight hours, ready for my decaff coffee pod from the machine. I then had a continental style breakfast of ham and cheese on two seeded rolls in La Terrazza. I finished packing just after eight o'clock and left my old suite at 8:30.

I walked into Piraeus and descended to the new underground Metro station. I caught the train to Syntagma square, where I alighted. I photographed the outside of the numismatic coin museum, but it was closed on Tuesdays.

I shelled out €8 to go in the historical museum, which was housed in the former parliament building. The huge debating chamber was most impressive. The one sided exhibition on the Turkish invasion of Cyprus was interesting, but there was no coverage of the two British sovereign areas.

I walked via several old Byzantine churches to the Metropolitan cathedral, before catching the train back to the old overground Metro station in Piraeus. At the gangway my old ship's card was retained and I had to go to reception to get a new one.

At one o'clock I had another small puttanesca pizza to eat, with lots of glasses of sparkling water to drink. At two o'clock the suites were released and I found I had number 520 with a balcony, a sofa, a double king sized bed, a walk-in closet and a bathroom with both shower and bath. I then slept for half an hour, before enjoying my first decaff coffee pod of this second cruise.

During the afternoon, I had to work on my Oceania paperwork, which took an age. At six o'clock I squeezed in six lengths of the long, cool pool which I had to myself for a change. At 6:15 I moved along my new corridor to La Dolce Vita lounge where I had some potato chips (crisps) and a glass of sparkling water. However no solo travellers turned up at 6:30.

At 6:45 I moved down to the Atlantide Main Dining Room (MDR) to bag a sharing table. After one hour no other sharers materialised, so I had to dine alone. I began with the roasted tomato soup, the Chateaubriand beef and the no sugar added ice creams. I had just one glass of the Greek red wine to drink. The whole meal lasted two hours.

At 9:30 I went to the Welcome Aboard showtime Emotions. Early on in the show, new CD Tim introduced me to the audience as Martin Lewis! The show was the same as a week previously, with the addition of Sergei & Alicia the dance couple. I went to sleep at eleven o'clock, having done twelve thousand steps, nearly equal to five miles of walking during the day.
