"Empires of the Mediterranean"

We went to Nafplion instead of Santorini

BoMoH --> Hounslow
12th March 2025
Wednesday

I awoke at 6:15 and was ready to go by 8:30. At nine o'clock I drove around to Sainsbury's Talbot Heath superstore, but the travel money desk didn't open until ten o'clock, when I had to be back at home in order to call a taxi.

I caught the 10:50 National Express coach via Ringwood and SoToN to LHR Terminal five. I ate my miniature pork pies en route, sitting at the far end of the aisle. We arrived at LHR T5 only five minutes late at 1:20, so I sat in the arrivals atrium for a bit, before catching the tube train to Hounslow Central. Here a man was receiving CPR on the pavement behind a modesty sheet, so the road was closed off and I had walk around the block to the Travelodge. I had a £61 double room on the third floor with en suite facing west over the rooftops.

At three o'clock I walked the 250 yards into Hounslow High Road, but bought nothing here. On the way back to the hotel, I went in the large ASDA superstore, but their travel money desk was closed on Wednesdays! However I was able to buy some sandwiches and cold roast beef slides here. Back at the Travelodge, I had a mug of instant decaff coffee as I started work on this blog. I then went for a one mile walk around Lampton Park in the bright sunshine, but cold wind.

Back at my hotel again, I finished off the miniature orange choc ices that I had bought earlier that afternoon in the Iceland store. Later I had two cheese and onion ASDA sandwiches with extra cold roast beef slices for supper. I spent the evening watching television, going to sleep at nine o'clock. During the day I had done over ten thousand steps, equal to over four miles of walking.

(London) LHR -> ATH (Athens)
13th of March 2025
Thursday

I was awoken by my two alarms at 4:30, but just missed the five o'clock tube train. The next one was going to Terminal 4, so I had to change trains at Hatton Cross. I got to LHR five minutes before check-in opened, but couldn't get the machine to recognise me as the last character in my booking code was an I and not a 1. I had to traipse along to the naughty corner at the far end, where the assistant checked-in my large suitcase, but couldn't issue my boarding card without further approval.

Security was quick and I already knew my gate number, so I caught the transit train to gate B47. Here the Malaga flight was just closing and so I was left on my own. I had two more cheese and onion ASDA sandwiches with extra cold roast beef slices for breakfast here. Whilst I was abluting in the disabled toilet, my flight began loading, so I was able to proceed down the suspended corridor and eventually on to the A320 Airbus. Here I had an aisle seat and the plane was quite full.

We were given a complimentary bottle of water to drink and three oat biscuits with sweetened flax seeds to eat. I then slept for one hour.

I updated this blog and played FreeCell and Hearts for the rest of the flight. We arrived a few minutes early, but it took an hour and a half before we left the airport. Passport control wasn't too bad, but the baggage carousel was overloaded and so our bags couldn't be offloaded. I had to turn the existing bags around to try to create more space into which our bags could be inserted. We then had to wait for all the other Viking guests to get their bags, before moving out to the transfer coach. This took fifty minutes to reach the ship via the busy motorways.

At the ship, check-in was quick, as was the safety demo by English singer Teddy. In my state room I met steward Dede from Bali, who rustled up a bath robe so that I could go swimming. I did six lengths of the warm pool under the closed roof and spent five minutes in the long hot tub.

At five o'clock CD Bruce, who I had worked with on the Viking Sky, interviewed the three lecturers for his TV show. Afterwards ACD Hazel, who I had also worked with on the Viking Sky, showed me where the tour escort forms are kept in the back office. At six o'clock I moved up to the Main Dining Room (MDR) where I asked for a sharing table. I was sat with lawyer Mark and his wife Carol from Pittsburgh. I had the Greek destination menu consisting of lentil soup, rack of lamb and baklava dessert. I had just sparkling water and no wine to drink.

At 8:30 I went to the History of Music of Greece concert with six male musicians and one lady singer. The music was all rather samey, but the drone pictures of Thessaloniki, Santorini and Mykonos were superb. I was surprised to see stage manager Mike from the Viking Sky and before that FOCL on board. I did three circuits of the promenade deck, equal to three quarters of a mile. I had done nearly ten thousand steps during the day, equal to four miles of walking. I went to sleep at 10:30, but it was only 8:30 on my body clock still on GMT.

Piraeus, Greece
14th of March 2025
Friday

I got up at 6:15 ready for a cooked breakfast at 6:45 al fresco a la veranda. I then walked into the port, but the flesh cut in my finger that I had made the previous day opened up again, so I had to head back to the ship for some plasters.

Heading out again, this time wearing my Paros baseball cap, I reached the new tram stop. Unfortunately I didn't have my bank card pin numbers with me to buy a ticket. I therefore just headed across town to the circular marina and thence back to the ship again.

At nine o'clock I caught the first shuttle bus into Athens, which took 45 minutes in the morning rush hour. I did the complete circuit of the base of the famous Acropolis, but fell over an unseen white marble step, grazing my elbow. I then caught the eleven o'clock bus back to the ship. This only took 20 minutes, so I was lunching by 11:45.

Temple of the Winds

Temple of the Winds

I had the kale & bean soup, the escalope of chicken with multi-coloured vegetables and the no sugar added berry sorbet to eat al fresco a la veranda. I had just one glass of sparkling water to drink, before sleeping for less than an hour.

At two o'clock I walked back into Piraeus to catch the tram to the new Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC, not SNCF). The first stop where I alighted was separated from the complex by a motorway and the pedestrian bridge was closed off. I took another tram back one stop and finally found the way to the side door of the multi-storey car park.

I explored the National Library and the National Opera House as well as the famous sloping gardens on the roofs. The latter were rather boring with lots of lavender, rosemary and olive trees, but little else. The temperature was 25 C, 77 F in the hot sun, but there was also a cooling sea breeze. I caught the tram back to the port, but there was no ticket machine to use at the little station. I then walked back around the quays to the ship.

Back in my state room I had a tin can of diet Coke as I updated this blog. At 4:30 I did six lengths of the warm pool with the roof two thirds open, before spending five minutes in the large hot tub. At 5:45 I went to the solo travellers meet up, but only ACD Hazel showed up.

At 6:15 I adjourned to the MDR where I had my favourite Greek bean soup, the sirloin steak with chips and the cherry crumble with vanilla ice cream to eat. I had just sparkling water to drink. I was sat with retired business manager Gary and his wife Sandy from Minnesota and Arizona.

At nine o'clock I was sat with Opera Director Jamie Hayes and Archaeologist Michael Stone at the front of the Star theatre ready to introduce ourselves on stage. I announced to the audience that this was my two hundredth and first cruise which raised a cheer. Afterwards Mike said he was on his two hundredth and tenth cruise! I went to sleep at 10:30, having done over twenty five thousand steps, equal to over ten miles of walking during the day.

Nafplion, Greece
15th of March 2025
Saturday

My alarm awoke me at 6:30 ready for my cooked breakfast at seven o'clock al fresco a la veranda. At eight o'clock I reported to the Star Theatre for my Nemea & Winery tour. At 8:25 I led my 32 charges down to the tender for the ten minute crossing to Nafplio(n).

On the quayside I met guide Nicoletta and driver Vassilis. We had a forty minute run inland to the Nemea ancient site. This had a partially reconstructed Doric temple to Zeus and the foundations of a later Christian basilica. There was a small museum alongside.

After a very short coach ride we arrived at the stadium, which was approached through a tunnel. The next stop was at the Skouras winery where we had a short tour of the factory and the cellars. They use brand new oak barrels, which they sell on after two or three years of use. We sampled three wines: one white and two red. We had breadsticks and cheese to nibble on.

Back at the quayside again, I visited the tourist information office and recorded my video in front of the old, abandoned steam engine. I caught the next tender back to the ship at 1:45, ready for the fish, chips & mushy peas al fresco a la veranda in the hot sun. I had just one glass of sparkling water to drink, before sleeping for one hour.

At 4:30 I went to the Katakolon port talk. Bruce gave a seven minute introduction followed by Jennifer the Shorex Manageress talking for thirteen minutes on the tours. Bruce then spoke for five minutes to conclude the twenty five minute session. I then went to the Spa pool, but neither hot tub was working and the main pool was rather busy, so I just wallowed for five minutes. There were no warm, stone beds free, so I dried off with a towel and returned to my state room.

At 5:45 I moved up to the star theatre where technician Samir, who I had met before on the Viking Saturn, set me up. We couldn't get presenter view to work, so stage manager Mike (ex FOCL) was called for. He said we needed to use Windows Project Extend, which did the trick. I should have known this and must remember it for future use!

At 6:30 I gave my forty two minute talk on the Story of the Mediterranean Sea. Afterwards, there was a long line for the MDR, so I went up to the buffet. Here I had the meat ball soup, the roast lamb with vegetables & jacket potato and the no sugar added cantaloupe sorbet with extra fruits to eat. I had two glasses of sparkling water to drink.

At nine o'clock I went to the Stage Door musical theatre production show, which I have heard several times before on both the Viking Sky and Viking Saturn. They began with "Somewhere" followed by a medley of cockney musicals and finishing with Les Mis. I had to do three circuits of the promenade deck, equal to three quarters of a mile, to reach my ten thousand step daily quota. I went to sleep at 10:30 having watched the start of my Med talk and having met my four miles of walking.

Katakolon, Olympia, Greece
16th of March 2025
Sunday

I awoke at 6:45 having slept for over eight hours. I had my usual cooked breakfast, but the veranda was full with people on early tours, so I had to eat inside, sat with a couple from the High Desert of Southern California.

At eight o'clock I was the first person to walk into a sleepy Sunday in Katakolon. I walked along the three parallel streets before climbing up to the cemetery. I backtracked to the steep track up the hillside to the hotel and cafe both with panoramic views from their terraces. I descended to the lighthouse, the sewage farm and the rocky beach, before walking back to the ship at 10:30. Here I had to complete two Virgin Voyages bids.

At 11:30 I had my first bacon and cheese double burger with fries of the cruise in the Pool Cafe. At 12:15 I slept for three quarters of an hour, before putting my wet smalls in the drier. Back in my state room I had a tin can of diet Coke and my first chocolate bar from the fridge. At three o'clock I went to Mike's interesting forty five minute talk on the Bayeux Tapestry, which I have heard before by other Viking Resident Historians.

At 4:30 I went to the Corfu port talk. Bruce gave a seven minute introduction, followed by Jennifer's twenty minutes on the tours. The final five minutes were Bruce's conclusions. At 5:15 I did six lengths of the deep, warm pool followed by five minutes in the large hot tub, before updating my Croatia talk.

At 6:15 I moved up to the MDR, where I was sat with Julie from Salem, Massachusetts with her mother Linda and Sigfrid a lady from Minnesota. I had the bean soup again, the prime rib of beef and the chocolate dessert to eat. I had just two glasses of sparkling water to drink.

At 8:30 I went to the screening of Verdi's opera Rigoletto. After half an hour I slipped out to work on my laptop. I then watched Jamie's History of Opera lecture on the telly. I went to sleep at 10:30 having done nearly fifteen thousand steps, equal to six miles of walking during the day.

That day I wrote on FaceBook: "I have just made by third visit to Katakolon on the Peloponnese peninsula of Greece. I have visited five pretty ports on the Peloponnese peninsula: Nafplion, Monemvasia, Gytheion, Pylos (Navarino) & Katakolon. I have visited seven fabulous ancient sites on the Peloponnese peninsula: Corinth, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Messini, Olympia, Nemea & Methoni. I have not yet visited: Mystras near Sparta, Tiryns or Argos. Have I missed anywhere important on the Peloponnese peninsula?"

Corfu, Greece
17th of March 2025
Monday

My alarms awoke me at 6:30 ready for my usual cooked breakfast al fresco a la veranda, with views across to the Albanian mountains. I then chatted with Jamie about the Rigoletto screening, his Opera lecture and my Shakespeare talks. At eight o'clock I walked out along the quayside to meet guide Magdalena and driver Andreas. We had 35 guests to look after on the all day tour around the north of the island.

We began at the Paleokastritsa monastery, which I have visited several times previously. Our comfort break was in the Castellino restaurant high above the monastery. Magdalena arranged for me to have a complimentary Cafe Americano.

Our lunch stop was at the Trumpet Tavern (Taverna Troumpeta). We began with a Greek salad with feta cheese, salami and ham. The main course was beef with tube pasta. The dessert was a small piece of honey cake. I had THREE glasses of the local rose wine to drink. I was sat with Jim the dentist and his wife from Nebraska and young man Matt, originally from Nevada, but now an Environmental Officer in Seattle.

In Corfu town we had a short guided walk and then fifty minutes of free time. I went in the main church, before whizzing around the narrow streets taking photographs. Back at the ship, I dozed for half an hour, before doing six lengths of the warm pool with the roof closed and spending five minutes in the large hot tub.

Corfu, Greece

Corfu, Greece

At 5:40 Samir set me up for my lecture and Mike set me up ready for my running commentary the next morning. At 6:30 I gave my 44 minute talk on Mamma Mia: the Greek Musical. This included the extra Dancing Queen video, which fitted perfectly. The final karaoke version of the Mamma Mia song was sung with unusual gusto! Julie's mother Linda came up to me at the end to congratulate me on my talk. One couple said how much they had enjoyed the Voyage ABBAtars show in London recently.

At 7:30 there was a line for the MDR, so I went to the surf & turf BBQ by the pool, but there were no seats free, so I moved into the World Cafe buffet. I had two pairs of all time favourite King crab legs and one lobster tail to start. I continued with the roast lamb, but it was very fatty. I should have picked well done pieces to eat! I finished with the no sugar added blueberry sorbet, but with lots of dried marashino cherries which are very sweet.

At nine o'clock I sat at the back of one of the side galleries of the Star theatre for the first time. I enjoyed the ABBA songbook which I have seen several times before on Viking ships. I went to sleep at 10:30 as I had an early start planned for the next day. During the day I had done nearly ten thousand steps, equal to four miles of walking.

Kotor, Montenegro
18th Mar. 2025
Tuesday

Kotor, Montnegro

Kotor, Montnegro

I awoke to my TWO alarms at six o'clock, but it was now only five o'clock on Central European Time (CET). At 5:45 I arrived in the forward facing Explorers Lounge which was already filling up. I had one croissant and one pain au chocolat to eat and one glass of orange juice to drink.

At six o'clock stage manager Mike arrived to get me going on my running commentary. I was broadcasting on Quiet Vox channel one for those guests who had their headsets with them. At seven o'clock we had berthed in Kotor, so I said goodbye to Mike and went to the World Cafe. Here I had my usual cooked breakfast, where I was later joined by Jim from Nebraska. He had trained at the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, before retraining as a dentist at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln the state capital.

Back in my state room, Dede had already been, so I was able to work on my laptop. At 8:45 I walked out to the coach on the quayside to meet guide Bruna and tall driver Stefan. We had just 25 people in our newish minibus for the run out to the Moric olive oil farm in Tici. Ilya, one of the owners, greeted us with doughnut balls dipped in honey. We then sampled either the dark or clear Rakia brandy.

At the factory we had the modern olive oil production process explained to us. At eleven o'clock, we had an early light lunch of ham, cheese and lettuce, followed by a slice of cake to eat. I had glasses of the red wine, the white wine and the lovely pomegranate juice to drink.

Back in Kotor, we had a half hour guided tour of the medieval town. Let loose, I walked along both ramparts and completed the triangle at the base of the huge cliff. Back at the ship, I just had some more cheese to eat in lieu of a late lunch. I then slept for one hour.

Kotor, Montnegro

Kotor, Montnegro

At 4:30 Bruce gave a five minute introduction, followed by Jennifer's twenty minutes on the tours and Bruce's five minute conclusion to the Dubrovnic port talk. At 5:15 I did six lengths of the cool pool and spent five minutes in the large hot tub. At 5:45 Tawanda from Zimbabwe set me up ready to give my 42 minute talk on Croatia with just one final video at 6:30.

At 7:30 I went to the MDR, but it was too late for a sharing table. I had the turmeric chickpea soup, the roast duck and the black sesame seed ice cream with chocolate truffle crust to eat. I had just two glasses of sparkling water to drink. I chatted to the two Michael's from Tampa, Florida and their two wives on the next table.

At nine o'clock I went to CD Bruce's piano cabaret, also featuring ACD Hazel and two of the musicians from the ship's band, which I have heard before. I went to sleep at 10:45 having done ten thousand steps, equal to four miles of walking during the day.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Wednesday

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Dubrovnik, Croatia

My alarms awoke me at 6:30 ready for my cooked breakfast at seven o'clock al fresco a la veranda. The gangway took a time to install, so I waited with CD Bruce and the Shorex team in the lobby. Out on the quayside, I met guide Branca and driver Boyan. We had just 29 guests to look after on the Dalmatian Coast Wine & Food Tasting tour.

Our first stop was at a horse driven stone olive mill and wooden screw press. At 9:30 we had a snack meal consisting of ham, cheese, salad and bread to eat with red wine and water to drink al fresco a la veranda.

The next stop was at the Vukas winery, where we were given a choice of SEVEN liqueurs to taste on the terrace. I tried the Loquat, Cherry and Olive varieties, with the former being like Amaretto and my favourite. Inside we tasted one white and two red wines with more local cheese fingers.

At the old walled town of Ston we had a short guided tour, followed by half an hour of free time. I raced around for the second time here taking photographs in the bright sunshine. At Mali Ston we got into a small pleasure craft to take us to a restaurant floating on a pontoon above the oyster beds. I had one glass of clear spirit and two glasses of white wine to drink. I gave the raw oysters and the cooked mussels on offer a miss.

Back at the ship at 3:15, I slept for over an hour, before doing six lengths of the cool pool and spending five minutes in the large hot tub as usual. Back in my state room, I filled in my escort report form and updated this blog. At 6:15 I dined on the celeriac soup, the poached salmon and the no sugar added pear Belle Helene. I had three glasses of sparkling water to drink. I was sat with Bob & Kathy from Cinncinati on the Ohio / Kentucky border.

At eight o'clock ACD Hazel led a short Guess that Tune by the pool, followed at 8:20 by dancing under the stars. I led off the Electric Slide as usual and also did a jive with one of the English vocalists. I was then monopolised for the rest of the evening by Carol from Buffalo, New York State. Sitting on a high stool on the edge of the dance floor, I experienced new cramps in my thigh muscles. The band played for an hour and a half non-stop with all the singers from around the ship each doing a pop number. I went to sleep at 10:30 having done ten thousand steps, equal to four miles of walking during the day.

Zadar, Croatia
20th of March 2025
Thursday

I got up to the dawn at six o'clock, half an hour before my alarms. I backupped all my photographs taken thus far on the cruise. At seven o'clock, I had my usual cooked breakfast al fresco a la veranda in the bright sunhine, but cold wind, as we passed some Dalmatian islands. I had one glass of sparkling water and one mug of decaff cappuccino coffee to drink. As Dede was servicing the state room at 7:30, I went up to the Explorers Lounge to watch the sail-in and tie-up in Zadar.

At 8:45 I met guide Domagoj and driver Zeljixo on the quayside. We had just 23 guests to look after on the one hour run out to the Paklenica National Park. Here we met mountain guide David, who spoke perfect American, but had never visited there. He said it was from watching American movies!

After a long wait for the rest rooms, we started walking alongside the bubbling brook. We then began climbing up a series of crazy pavement steps into the majestic limestone gorge. Some guests dropped back along the way. At the top we came to a flat meadow by the stream for our packed lunch picnic of a submarine roll of ham and cheese, an apple and a bottle of water. We walked back down to the coach park which was only halfway along the hike up.

Back at the ship at 2:30 the restaurants had closed, so I had two open sandwiches, one shrimp and one beef, in the living room cafe. I then slept for one hour. At 4:30 CD Bruce gave his seven minute introduction and five minute conclusion to the port talk session, either side of Shorex Manageress Jennifer's twenty minutes on the ship's tours. I didn't then go to the pool as usual as the chlorine had begun to irritate my shins.

At 6:15 I moved up to the MDR where I had my favourite bean soup yet again. I continued with the sirloin steak & chips and finished with the no sugar added berry clafouti. I was sat with Keith & Mickey from Washington state, who showed me their house covered in snow!

At 8:40 I went to the Star theatre where the two nightclub singers were entertaining the guests. At one point I danced on the carpet at the back of the theatre with Carol. At nine o'clock CD Bruce introduced Captain Olav and then most of the public facing crew came on stage. Afterwards the four professional singers and the four musicians performed their excellent Legends production show. This included songs by Tom Jones, Elton John and Shirley Bassey from Britain and then some American singers too. I went to bed at 10:30 having done nearly twelve thousand steps, nearly equal to five miles of walking, during the day.

Koper, sLOVEnia
21st of March 2025
Friday

I awoke at 6:20, ten minutes before my alarms as the dawn broke. At seven o'clock I had my usual cooked breakfast al fresco a la veranda with steam coming off the infinity pool in the bright sunshine. At 8:15 I met guide Zoran and driver Zlatko at bus number eight. We had 33 guests to look after on the one hour run out to Postojna in sLOVEnia.

We began at the spectacular Predjama castle cut into the rock face. This had a super audio system with contactless waymarkers. Our second stop was at the famous Postojna caves. We caught a miners type railway through a long series of caverns, before walking deeper into the cave system. We saw lots of stalactites and stalagmites as you might imagine. They had another audio system, but this time with a numeric keypad. We then caught the train back, taking an hour and a half in total underground.

At the Hotel Jama we had the beef noodle soup, a seasonal salad, chicken & pork with potatoes & veg, and apple strudel to eat. The lady next to me gave me her escalope of chicken to eat. I had one glass of red wine and lots of glasses of water to drink. After the meal I walked along the riverside to the old water mill.

We then drove back to the ship along the motorway. Here I had to accept my next two Silversea contracts on the Silver Muse around the Greek Islands in August. At 6:15 I adjourned to the MDR, but it was very quiet on the last night of the cruise, so I had to dine alone. I had the pear & parsnip soup, the tenderloin of beef and the no sugar added raspberry dessert to eat. I had just two glasses of sparkling water to drink.

Back in my state room I worked on my laptop and watched some lectures on the telly. I went to sleep at 10:20 having done ten thousand steps equal to four miles of walking during the day.

Burano

Burano

I awoke just before six o'clock, but it was overcast for the first time this cruise. At seven o'clock I had TWO eggs Benedict to eat al fresco a la veranda, but under the protection of the awning. I had one mug of decaff cappuccino coffee to drink.

Back in my state room, I worked on my laptop. When Dede came, I adjourned to the Explorers Lounge. At eleven o'clock I had an early lunch of corn chowder soup with corn bread biscuit (scone), followed by the mixed grill from the buffet with various vegetables and the no sugar added banana sorbet with dried maraschino cherries. I had just two glasses of sparkling water to drink.

At noon I caught the first complimentary shuttle boat across the lagoon to Venice. It took forty minutes to reach the private landing stage by the Hotel Gabrielli. I headed south east away from the central sights to reach the far corner of the main island, which took two miles of walking at a speed of three miles per hour (mph). It was damp and overcast all afternoon, but I didn't need to use the Viking umbrella I had taken with me. I then doubled back via the side alleys, which took another two and a half miles of walking at a slightly slower speed of 2.8 mph.

I caught the three o'clock shuttle boat back across the lagoon to the ship. In the cruise terminal the officials were demanding passports, but speaker Jamie and myself hadn't taken ours with us! They eventually accepted my UK driving licence instead.

At four o'clock I went to the Wintergarden conservatory expecting afternoon tea to be served there. Unfortunately as it was turn around day, there was no service here. I made do with a decaff cappuccino in the World Cafe instead.

At six o'clock I went to the MDR where I was seated at a round table for six, with two couples and Karen from Fresno in California. I had the Tuscan bean soup, the chicken Kiev and the no sugar added mango tango dessert to eat. I had one glass of the French blended red wine and two of the sparkling water to drink.

At 8:30 In the Star theatre I watched the Conclave movie for a second time, having previously seen it on a long haul flight earlier in the year. I went to sleep at 10:45 having done ten thousand steps, equal to four miles of walking during the day.
